From Our Kitchen
(to Yours)
Nothing satisfies the soul quite like a meal shared with family and friends.
A table somehow has the ability to stabilize a day or invigorate a weekend. It doesn’t matter if it is square or round, long or short, there always seems to be room for one more!
The love that gathers around a table, whether it is in a kitchen, dining room, on a patio, or out on the porch, is the stuff memories are made from.
Our tables are probably a lot like yours. We have husbands, children, sometimes foster children, parents, nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, neighbors, and friends who grace our tables. They eat, laugh, cry, argue, plot, scheme, and eat some more around our tables... and nothing makes us happier!
And just as important as the company may be, what goes on the table can have a way of becoming the star or the show!
Maybe it’s a bowl of comfort in the form of hot soup and a loaf of warm bread. Maybe it’s Christmas breakfast with four kinds of pancakes and dippy eggs made to order. It might be a recipe that has been passed around the family for as long as anyone can remember, or something completely new that we decided to give a try.
Whatever it is, you can be pretty sure someone will be asking for the secret of how you made it!
The recipes you’ll find here are being shared from our hearts. Not because we’re experts, or because we think our way is the best way, but because we’ve spent a lifetime sitting in kitchens, sharing secrets with the people we love.
We learned to cook by watching our moms, cooking was a passion we shared with them and some of our favorite memories were made with them in the kitchen.
I spent a lot of time sharing meals with my parents, and sitting around a table with them always felt like home, no matter where that table was.
I loved it most when they were sitting at my table because I was able to share back with them some of the love they had given me.
And every time my parents left my house after a visit, my dad would say the same thing:
“If you leave Barbara’s house hungry, shame on you!”
I kind of think he was telling me I made too much.
But I’m still not entirely sure. LOL

A Little Note Before You Put On Your Apron
Cooking, for us, is an art, not a science.
We are not trained chefs. We didn't go to culinary school, and there isn't a test kitchen hiding somewhere behind these pages measuring calories, proteins, or the precise number of chocolate chips that belong in a cookie.
What we have are recipes we've made for the people we love, ideas we've brought to life, flavors that somehow found their way together, and measurements that will get you started.
So before you put on your apron, there are a few things you should know about cooking with us.
It's okay to mix with your hands.
Measure with your heart. If the recipe says one tablespoon of vanilla and something inside you says two, add two.
Learn to trust your senses. Watch it. Taste it. Smell it.
You'll be surprised how often your nose knows when something is done before the timer does.
There are a few rules we won't bend on.
Measure liquids in a liquid measuring cup and dry ingredients with dry measuring cups.
Sneak a taste whenever you need to, but for the love of keeping germs where they belong, do not put that spoon back into the pot!
And above everything else, put your phone down and enjoy your time in the kitchen!
Memories are made in kitchens. Problems are solved over countertops. Stories are told while something simmers on the stove. Children learn by standing on stools beside us. Recipes get passed from one pair of hands to another.
Beautiful things are shared here.
So tie on your apron, pull out a bowl, and make the recipe yours.
